Client Overview:
Braithwaite Company Limited (BCL) is a Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Railways, with a legacy of over 100 years in engineering excellence. BCL is known for its contribution to critical national infrastructure and industrial projects, specializing in the manufacturing of railway wagons, cranes, and infrastructure components.

Project Challenge:
The project involved retrofitting and revamping an Electrical Level Luffing (ELL) Crane at the Naval Ship Repair Yard (NSRY), Cochin, within a highly constrained work environment.
A major technical obstacle surfaced during execution: Jammed Boom Mounting Pin
A 240 kg boom mounting pin, located at a height of 25 meters, was tightly jammed within its flange, making conventional removal impossible without risking structural damage or safety.
Solution Delivered:
PORTECH engineered and executed a customised, multi-step solution:
• Custom Fabrication: Specialized jigs and fixtures were fabricated on-site to handle the precise extraction of the jammed pin.
• High-Access Setup: Scaffolding was securely installed at 25 meters to facilitate safe and stable working conditions at height.
• Precision Extraction: Controlled mechanical cutting and manipulation techniques were used to safely dislodge the pin without affecting adjacent structures.
• Component Replacement: A new boom mounting pin was installed post-extraction, restoring the crane’s full functional integrity.
Results:
• Project completed within the scheduled timeline
• Zero safety incidents and high compliance with operational protocols
• Crane successfully restored to full working condition at NSRY Cochin
• Reinforced PORTECH’s ability to resolve on-site technical complexities with precision engineering
Conclusion:
This project is a testament to PORTECH’s problem-solving capabilities and technical agility in executing specialized crane retrofit works—even under spatial and structural constraints, while ensuring safety, quality, and timely delivery.
